When a death occurs at home, it can feel overwhelming, especially if it is unexpected. Knowing what to do can help bring a sense of calm during a very difficult time. If the death was expected: You should contact the family GP or out-of-hours doctor. The doctor will attend and confirm the death. Once this has been done, you can contact a funeral director to begin arrangements. If the death was unexpected: You should contact emergency services by dialling 999 or 112. The Gardaí and a doctor will attend. In some cases, the Coroner may become involved.
